Family Room Tour and Sources
I’ve been meaning to share a tour and sources for our family room for over a year now. I recently updated some of the furniture and decor and it was just the push I needed to finally get this done!
So our house is small. Like right around 1500 sq ft small. When we renovated our kitchen and took a partial wall out, it made it FEEL so much bigger. But it’s still very small. Open concept can make for some design challenges as well. We don’t have many walls in this main living area. Its the kitchen/dining/family room all in one so I needed to make clear “zones” when designing these spaces.
One easy way to create zones in an open concept home is with rugs. I have a large 9x12 vintage look rug in the family room that grounds the space even though there are only two real walls in here. ;) Another challenge for this room is the plant ledge. I want to cover it up, Dan wants to keep it. After we added the vertical wood paneling (Shiplap look) to the walls, I hated it less and added plants to it. But I still want to cover it up. Its a dust collector.
The walls in here are painted Benjamin Moore White Dove. Its a creamy white that doesn’t feel to “cold”. I really love it. The floors are actually Pergo Max laminate. I’m always so happy when people mistake them for real wood flooring and ask what color we stained them. Unfortunately, they no longer carry this color but it was called Lumbermill Oak.
Now lets get to the furniture! Since this room is a bit tricky with the open layout and lack of walls, it took me a while to get it feeling “right”. I think I finally have it!
We’ve had this sofa for about 7 years now and its holding up so well. The entire cover can be taken off and washed so that really helps to keep it looking fresh with two kids. I can’t remember the color we chose, but I’d recommend getting samples anyway as colors may look different in your home depending on natural light and wall colors etc.
The little spindle leg side table is a vintage find, but I’m linking similar options here for you. Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 I like the contrast of the curvy legs with the clean lines of modern floating tv console Dan made us. Having different styles of furniture in the same space can make it feel so much more interesting.
Between my chair and sofa I used a round woven ottoman as my end table. I like the texture it adds and I also love that it opens up so I can store extra pillow covers and blankets inside. This one was from Target years ago, but here’s one that’s very similar.
The leather chair and a half was a lucky Homegoods find. The closest I’ve found is this one from West Elm. It comes in a lot of color options as well which I love.
I went with two coffee tables in here because a) my sofa is pretty wide and b) the chair and a half is pretty wide and c) I wanted to try something a little different! So far, I love it! Every seat has a place to put their drinks, it balances out the room, and it makes it feel kind of fancy. And you know I’m fancy lol. Unfortunately mine are out of stock, so here are some alternatives that are similar. Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 and here are two cute square ones you could try if you want the two table look but a smaller scale.
This woven leather chair makes my heart beat faster. It really does. I love how pretty it is from all angles, which is important because you see all of the angles depending on where you are in the house. It’s low which is also nice because it doesn’t make the room feel crowded or make it hard to see the other side of the room. I got the brown/brown.
As I mentioned before, Dan made us this floating console. But have no fear, I’m linking some similar options. Be sure you mount any of these to multiple studs. Use heavy duty wood screws. You don’t want this falling down. Option 1 Option 2
My pillows are from a hodge podge of etsy shops and many of them are limited or one of a kind. But- here are some awesome shops so you can take a look! Kilim Pillow Kingdom Tshaj Grace and Valiant
I’m gonna wrap this post up with links to some decor items. Happy shopping!
tree I tweaked this a bit and cut some branches off and reattached them to give it a more realistic look. See my story highlights on instagram @hartley_home on how I made the planter for cheap!
similar throw blanket on sofa
cute faux plant
large lamp (mine is thrifted)
Let me know if I’m missing any important items in the comments and I’ll do my best to find you a link!
