No Sew Bench Cushion

Custom bench cushions get really expensive really fast, so they’re a perfect candidate for a DIY. This is such a simple project and I’ve done it multiple times in my own home. The best part? You don’t have to know how to sew. Oh and the other best part? When you get sick of your fabric its both easy and inexpensive to swap it out.

Here’s what you need:

thin plywood

foam (I typically use something at least 3” thick for a bench but for this I doubled up since I made a daybed)

batting

fabric

staple gun

The first step is to cut your wood to size. Some home improvement stores will even do this for you. To cut your foam, the best tool is an electric bread knife. But you can also use a standard bread knife and that works as well. Lay the batting on the ground with the wood and foam on top.

Now pull the batting tight and staple it onto the wood. Fold the edges as neatly as possible.

Next step is to lay this on top of the fabric and staple the fabric to the wood. Be sure to pull your fabric tightly and check to be sure it’s laying nicely and that the pattern (if there is one) is straight on the side that will show. Staple it on and fold the ends neatly.
