Cedar Ceiling Front Porch Update with Home Depot x Werner

This post is sponsored by The Home Depot.

I often find the smaller scale projects around our home turn out to be some of the most rewarding. While planning out my projects for this year, I knew updating the front porch was something that would really make an impact. With little time and effort, and products from The Home Depot, we transformed this:

Into this!

Isn’t that better!? It didn’t take much! We added a cedar ceiling and I trimmed out the door and windows to create a more custom and grand look. And you can too!

Here’s how:

The first step was staining the cedar to protect it and give it some subtle color. I used Olympic stain in base 79550A and tinted it to Madrone. Then we needed to figure out where our rafters were. Our placement was not where we needed it, but we solved that problem by adding pressure treated furring strips perpendicular to the direction of the cedar. The Werner Multi Position Pro was the perfect ladder for reaching this tall ceiling safely. Then we used a nail gun to attach the cedar to the furring strips.

You can use a rubber mallet to gently tap the tongue and groove pieces together when needed before securing the wood to the furring strips.

If you have a light fixture like we do here, draw a circle, and use a jigsaw to cut around the mount. Then keep on going!

You can tell this was an easy project from that little love note Dan wrote on the ceiling. Let’s just say when projects are difficult, there is no love note. (If you’ve done DIY with your partner before, you know what I mean. Hah!)

After the ceiling was done I decided to add some trim around my door and windows. I used PVC trim for exterior durability and was able to attach it to my stucco with our hammer drill, masonry drill bit, Tapcon screws, and our impact driver. I used a countersink bit to make a little recess for the screw heads. 1. Countersink hole. 2. Drill into the stucco with the hammer drill. 3. Use impact driver to insert screws. Repeat.

Finally, I caulked, wood filled, sanded, and painted it all black for a cohesive look. It makes the door look HUGE now!

We were able to find everything we needed at The Home Depot, and the tool that really made a difference in how smooth this update went was the Werner Multi-Position Pro. This ladder is lightweight, which I LOVE. It was so nice to be able to move the ladder around by myself when I was working alone.

Don’t we make a happy little team? Hah! I also appreciate that this is a 5-in-1 ladder so there was never a need to swap out ladders to do any of this! It can hold up to 375 pounds so Dan and I were able to stand on it at the same time too, which was nice for when we were installing the cedar.

Some ladders are very cumbersome when it comes to changing up the position, but the Multi Position Pro was super easy to use. It’s extra wide flared bottom offers firm support, which I love because I’m not a huge fan of heights. This ladder made me feel safe and secure as I worked.

It can also reach up to 22 feet as an extension ladder which will definitely come in handy for future projects! Like I said, it can do it all!

We have always been a fan of Werner ladders and will continue to recommend them to anyone looking to add a quality and long lasting ladder to their tool collection. If you have any questions please leave them below and I’ll be happy to help!
